There have been few sights in cricket quite like Chris Gayle in full flow. Tall, powerful and seemingly unhurried even while destroying attacks, the Jamaican opener known as "The Universe Boss" built one of the most feared reputations the sport has seen.
Gayle made his ODI debut against India in 1999, while still a teenager. He followed it with a Test debut against Zimbabwe the following year. He grew steadily into a genuine opening force through the early 2000s. He played in the 2002 and 2004 ICC Champions Trophies, helping West Indies win the latter, before finishing runner-up in the 2006 edition. He also spent time in county cricket with Worcestershire during this period. He was handed the West Indies Test captaincy in 2007 and held the role until 2010, a stretch that coincided with some of his most consistent form as a batter.
Across formats, Gayle built one of the most well-rounded records any West Indian batter has produced. He scored 333 against Sri Lanka in Galle in 2010, which was his second Test triple-century. At the 2015 World Cup, he scored 215 against Zimbabwe, becoming the first West Indian to register a double-century in ODI cricket. Along with a century in T20I cricket, that combination of a Test triple-century, an ODI double-hundred, and a T20I hundred made him the first player to have achieved all three.
It was in T20 cricket, though, that Gayle became a phenomenon in his own right. Playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore against Pune Warriors India in the 2013 IPL, he scored 175 not out off 66 balls. He reached his century in just 30 deliveries, an innings widely regarded as one of the greatest ever played in the format. He was named the IPL's Most Valuable Player in 2011 and finished as the tournament's leading run-scorer the following year. On the international stage, he scored 117 against South Africa at the 2007 World Twenty20, becoming the first man to score a century in a T20 World Cup match. He went on to play a central role in West Indies' triumphs at the 2012 and 2016 editions of the tournament.
Gayle's career was not without its share of friction. In 2011, a radio interview in which he sharply criticised the West Indies board and coaching staff deepened an existing dispute between the two sides. He was subsequently not selected for the India series and remained out of international cricket for more than a year before a resolution was eventually reached in 2012. He also drew widespread condemnation in January 2016 for making inappropriate on-air comments in Australia during the Big Bash League.
Gayle played his final international match in 2021, closing out a career that had made him the most capped player in West Indies history across formats at the time. He finished with 19,593 international runs across Tests, ODIs and T20Is, including 42 centuries. He continued turning out in franchise and other T20 leagues for several years afterward, still chasing milestones and drawing crowds well into his forties. In the end, Gayle is remembered less for any single number in the record books than for the effect he had on the format itself, having played as large a part as anyone in turning T20 cricket from a novelty into a genuine spectacle.
